Canada extradites genocide suspect to Rwanda

For the first time the State of Canada extradited a Rwandan citizen indicted of crimes against humanity to the Rwandan justice.

Léon Mugesera who resided in Canada since 1993 arrived in the night of the 24th January at the International Airport of Kigali and was handed over to the Rwandan police by Canadian officials.

The former vice president of the MRND party is accused of calling on the Rwandan people to commit the genocide against the Tutsi in his public speeches. Especially a speech dated in 1992, in which he described the Tutsi as enemies of the state and mob, is said to represent clear evidence for the incitement of the crimes committed in 1994.
